{"id":19,"date":"2021-11-03T00:02:46","date_gmt":"2021-11-03T00:02:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.medicalupdateonline.com\/conferenceconnectissue1\/?p=19"},"modified":"2022-08-02T12:02:09","modified_gmt":"2022-08-02T12:02:09","slug":"cutaneous-t-cell-lymphoma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.medicalupdateonline.com\/conferenceconnectissue02101\/cutaneous-t-cell-lymphoma\/","title":{"rendered":"Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Interview and article by Christine Clark, PhD, FRPharmS.<\/p>\n<p>Cutaneous lymphomas (CLs) represent a rare and heterogeneous group of lymphomas that present in the skin without extracutaneous manifestations at the time of diagnosis.<sup>1<\/sup>\u00a0Mycosis fungoides (MF) and S\u00e9zary syndrome (SS) are the two best studied types of CTCL,<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0together accounting for around two thirds of all CTCLs.<sup>3,4<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Article 1 - Weishaupt #1.mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/641727639?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Dr Carsten Weishaupt (Head of Dermato-oncology, University Hospital of M\u00fcnster, Germany) explains that a cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) is a rare disease with an incidence of less than one in 100,000 people per year.<\/p>\n<p>MF and SS typically present differently. He says,<br \/>\n\u201cWe have on one hand mycosis fungoides which really starts in the skin and it usually primarily involves only the skin and then it might spread to other organs like the lymph nodes, the blood but also the visceral organs and, in contrast to that, we have the S\u00e9zary syndrome, which starts with erythroderma \u2026.. and we also have involvement of the lymph nodes and the blood which is quite typical and it&#8217;s also more aggressive than mycosis fungoides.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diagnosis can be challenging. Dr Weishaupt says,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEspecially if you have erythroderma you have to think about all the different diagnoses and it often takes a long time until we really have the diagnosis of CTCL because often it is misdiagnosed with atopic dermatitis or even psoriasis sometimes\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">References<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">Vermeer M.\u00a0 Epidemiology of cutaneous lymphoma.
